The indefatigable and, in all things Red Sox baseball, indispensable Rob Bradford notes a few things about Clay Buchholz:
Epstein said that unlike last season when Clay Buchholz had a clear path to the Red Sox’ starting rotation, the hurler understands he will have to “fight for everything he gets” this year. The GM spoke of how accepting Buchholz has been to understanding the importance of the mental approach, which the righty has been working on with the Sox’s sports psychology coach Bob Tewksbury.
Added to the Mark Wagner quote that David Pinto noted today, things could be looking up for Buchholz, a Nuke LaLoosh million dollar arm-five cent head (in reference to the 29 stolen laptops) type. Could Tewks be his Crash Davis? As for Tewks, the former Major Leaguer and New England Native, it’s good to see him involved with the Sox in some capacity. He was a relatively mediocre pitcher (career 110-102 record and 104 ERA+). He was a player, however, who was frequently cited as outperforming his talents. I can think of no better a person to help the exceptionally talented get the most of their gifts.
I would think Baseball Life Coach or the Crash Davis slot would be among the more crucial positions on any team. So many kids today have so much talent … but don’t know how to best apply it.

I’m in absolute agreement. Chamberlain and Buchholz are among those who could use a steady hand to help ensure they harness their talents. Both are tremendously gifted, but I wonder if a dime get’s me change for their noggins.
